ok I feel silly now

December 27, 2006

I’ve used laptops for years but never had one of my own till this year. I’ve used Mac ones, PC ones, several flavors of OS but I mainly use desktop machines… so I never knew.. that you can click on the touch pad for a left click… I feel silly now.

EDIT: feel less silly now used a professor,s mac book, and it did not do the tap click… completely slowed me down

Currently bashing my head against the wall with Ubuntu 64bit, I compiled the 2.6.17.9 kernel the other day and while I now have Wow on Wine flying and the latest Nvidia drivers, my other than root HD’s don’t work at all blah. Posted for help in the Ubuntu forums but need to be home before I can get the info they need to help me and post it.

*edit* update on the not able to access harddrive thing, apparewntly I had to patch the kernel for EVMS so that it’ll work, will recompile the kernel with an evms patch and Kovalairs patch tonight. Wondering where I get the source for edgy for that matter, in for a penny in for a pound. ^^

On the fiction front the previous post’s fragment is turning out to be better than expected… well at least until I read it out loud and get to hear if its good or stretching it.

Nifty Corners Cube is the update to nifty corners and it is most awesome. I love tools that let me get to work right away instead of getting stuck on repetitive steps to make it work.

You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow by evading it today.

Seems to sum up perfectly how big business +US government currently works, evade evade EVADE!. Short term profits seem to outweigh everything these days, man people are greedy.

+ Speculative fiction excerpt

/*begin fiction fragment
“Do you have what it takes to Hack the black? Can you take down whole selected military infrastructures from across the globe without destroying civilian functions? Do you have what it takes to subversively entangle rogue governments and dictators and bring their strangleholds growth to a halt? Can you take down worldwide monopolies, terrorist regimes and incumbent dictators for life, from home? Do you think you can?” -Army recruitment poster, 2021

Abby looked at her copy of the recruitment poster than back at the building, is this really an army recruitment post? The sleek office building in downtown New York looked nothing like what you would expect, but the address was right and the poster wasn’t exactly about conventional warfare, not that anyone wasted time on that anymore.

*edit followup on EV’s here

So the list of tech for car of the future is as follows

Ultra capacitors (either EESoft? titanium biturate? ceramic or MIT carbon nanotubes (note the nano tubes mainly serve for massive increase in surface area perhaps they could be combined?) there are virus/bacteria based ones as well…. hmm can you get surface area by bateria wires, grow nanotubs on those wires and go from there? lol
Gun engine (even scaled back to run an alternator off old cooking oil its still all good)

solar cell plastics/paint (trickle charging)

one other comes to mind due to the fact that I live in VA and it get hot here, the inside of a car is generally a temperature difference of at least 10 degrees F from the outside, isn’t there some sort of charging process that harnesses a temperature gradient passively? (I want a car that charges itself by cooling its interior on a hot day is that so much to ask? lol)

Writing on paper and upgrades

August 17, 2006

Last night I managed to get some of a short stories down on paper go me, if its ever ready I’ll let you all know.

In other news all my computer parts should have been dumped on my parents front porch by now (UPS sucks and their neighborhood is safer) so tonight or tomorrow I get to start rebuilding my system. I’m taking a couple plunges here, updating to pci-e and amd dual core 64bit, going to attempt to bring it to life with 64bit Ubuntu as well so total software hardware changes across the board. I’ll post results later.

Power outages

August 16, 2006

SO today the power went out for about 3 hours. We stuffed binders and sorted cards. Than the power came back, And I got to start-up the 3 servers (web-server, e-mail/intranet/storage server and file-maker DB server) All are in a locked room have diff passwords and are supposed to have instructions for what to do by them, but none of that relevant info actually is here the people who know are gone and I’m the last man standing. Its been a long morning. In other news I have an idea for a great google/everything web 2.0 mash-up, but have yet to get anything together.. we’ll see how it goes. Back to not falling asleep.

love you hunny

I’m Back! (Listens to echo)

August 15, 2006

So I’m back from Canada, So glad we didn’t fly but the drive was murder on my back will continue to be overly tense for the rest of the week.

Ordered My new pc parts last night, the only one that doesn’t have a solid 5 egg rating at newegg.com is the mobo, so we’ll see if its shitty or not when I try to build.  No OCing no fancy stuff just stock parts so It hopefully just works.

In other news more Ideas bouncing  in my head but no frags today

A Slashdot car of the future?

August 4, 2006

Gun Engine Explodes Fuel Efficiency

Prototype car runs 100 miles on four ounces of water as fuel

and today

Super Battery

what do these all have in common aside from them being found by the fine members of the slashdot community? I think they would make a damn cool car together.

OK so to start we have the gun engine

  1. It can be made in today’s factories with a minimum of changes and no new exotic materials
  2. It can theoretically get 220 mpg
  3. its already flex fuel ready if it burns it works
  4. it simplifies the car and lightens it (no transmission no radiator needed) for more efficientcy/room for other things

second we have the car that runs on water

  1. 100 miles on 4 ounces of water (converted to HHO from H2O so its not really water at that point)
  2. um that’s it really its unconfirmed and the energy to convert water to HHO may be more than it puts out
  3. there’s a couple different version of car runs on water that all involve some easy way to make H2O to Hydrogen in the car or garage so people are working on this
  4. Military is interested so if they make it work it Will eventually.. or die a slow sad death

and third the super battery

  1. its actually a super capacitor, go go carbon nanotubes
  2. charges in seconds very very high amount of energy stored does not wear out anywhere near as fast as a battery does
  3. team plans to have working version end of the year production within five years.

So we have two improvements on old designs, and literal vaporware. So what if we put these all together..

assuming all 3 work

  • 128 ounces to a gallon
  • HHO =3,200 miles to a gallon?
  • gun engine =200 miles to a gallon
  • gun engine on HHO?= no clue not doing math now, seems way too unlikely

  • So add the new max capacitors +charging off of braking like the new Hybrids…
    • add really intelligent control systems to max efficiency between use of capacitors and engine
      • If this really was a slashdot car embedded specialized Linux that you could use to program this in would be interesting
      • use capacitors charged off brakes to run all the electronics except for start-up
      • alt charge for capacitors could be next gen solar-> use capacitor for the start-up for least fuel consumption etc

just the gun engine alone can run off anything and much higher efficiency so add these two together and you get some insanely lovable potential for gadgetry, tweaking and whatnot, not to mention a runs on anything can power the sickest electronics and still kick your car of today’s gas guzzling butt warm fuzzy feeling.

anything else I missed? I’m sure there’s enough new tech that goes through /. to make all cars of today obsolete I just want one now.

also apologies for overuse of efficiency and whatnot just that much potential just sitting there makes my brain go mushy

    Where I go each day

    August 4, 2006

It’s a very slow day today at work due to

    1. everything urgent that needs to be done I have no power over to change it (lost e-mails don’t ask its in the void)

    2. nothing else is urgent

so i am hitting all the places I usually read-up on

    • diggdot.us
      • mash-up of digg reddit del.icio.us/popular and slashdot cause who really wants to go to all those different sites when its right here already? of course I don’t have accounts I use or digg/rate stories so this works for me
    • lifehacker.com
      • most insanely useful tidbits of information I find are from here, or the ones that would be useful if I didn’t mark them as to-read and drop them in ma.gnolia.com for later (just switched from del.icio.us today so I’m trying it)
    • flickrleech
      • most interesting flickr pics by day working on getting around to making it my desktop, I know it can be done but I’ve been busy. Good source of inspiration/ooo pretty colors stuff
    • and my webcomics feed
      • Been clearing this out a lot lately dropped about 20 I no longer read or that have ended and added some new ones lately the bit to the right of this is just the first 10 the new ones are at the bottom. I have not gotten around to making it parse just the newest comic element on each site itself guess that’s another thing to do sometime also its hosted on the webspace from my first website ever back in middleschool/highschool? when I knew nothing at all, but it works and its free and i can mess with the raw html so eh

    3 days to Canada

    August 3, 2006

In 3 days I go to Canada for a week so possibly less writing here, cause I will be out having a life and whatnot with my girlfriend and meeting family members and whatnot. So not so much here for now. I may add on to this post later today however.
